Chittagong College, one of the oldest educational institutions in Bangladesh, was established in 1869. As a subject, English began its journey with the establishment of the college. From the very beginning English was thought as a compulsory subject at intermediate and degree levels. Mentionably, Department of English was established in 1910, and the honours course was introduced in 1919. From then onwards, the department has contributed to creating an enlightened class of people. A cluster of luminous academics like Subodh Chandra Sengupta, Jogesh Chandra Singha, Abu Rushd Matin Uddin, Mahtab Uddin, Azahar Hossain, Abdus Subhan, Dr. Nuruzzaman and Ranjit Kumar Chakraborty to name a few, built the glorious history of the department.
At present the department is run by a number of dynamic academics who are devoted to disseminate knowledge among the students.
Currently, the department is one of the biggest in the college in terms of enrollment of honours students under National University, Bangladesh and the department is doing very well in both curricular and extracurricular arenas.
